Welcome to this page dedicated to our arctic fox photo tour in Iceland, in Hornstrandir nature reserve. This Arctic Fox photo workshop takes place in Iceland’s most beautiful region and is open to everyone. Far from mass tourism, we take small groups out onto the Icelandic tundra to photograph Arctic Fox, marine mammals and dozens of species of birds.
Whatever your level, this photo workshop in Iceland is suitable for all photographers. At the beginning of the trip, we draw up a programme for each participant, according to their needs and themes (wildlife, landscape, etc.). Afterwards, working groups are set up to help everyone achieve their objectives.
This photo tour in Iceland is led by two photographers: myself, a wildlife photographer, and Urip Dunker, a landscape photographer. We have both been guides in Hornstrandir nature reserve for several years and will be delighted to share our experience.
Before becoming wildlife and nature photographers, we were passionate about nature and working to protect it. During these photo tours, certain rules of respect for species are non-negotiable. We want to do wildlife photography without harming animals – we humans do enough of that already!
Westfjords is Iceland’s most isolated region, and Hornstrandir is even more so. There are no roads to get there, and the Drangajökull glacier blocks all passage. The Icelanders left the village of Hesteyri in the 1950s. Since then, Hornstrandir has been completely wild. It’s the ideal territory for wildlife and nature photography enthusiasts!
Hornstrandir nature reserve is Iceland’s Arctic Fox kingdom. This remote area on the edge of the Westfjords is home to the highest density of polar foxes in the world.
Arctic Foxes arrived on the island during the last ice age and have become Iceland’s only endemic mammal. They are now protected in the reserve and benefit from ideal conditions, with no predators and an abundance of seabirds.
For this Arctic Fox photo tour, we take you into isolated fjords where only a few experienced hikers arrive. We’re putting in place a programme tailored to each individual and rules of respect and ethics to limit our impact. Even if we’re the only ones there, we have to be extra vigilant so as not to disturb the Arctic Foxes and never interact with them.
Hornstrandir is Iceland’s birdwaching paradise. The cliffs of the reserve are a refuge for millions of birds who come here to nest in summer. Inland, other species live around the lakes and in the tundra. During this photo tour, we’ll be able to observe and photograph species such as Common Murres, Red-throated Loons, the emblematic Eiders, Harlequin Ducks and Purple Sandpipers on the coast. Inland, red-necked phalaropes and golden plovers are common. Finally, if we’re lucky, the white-tailed eagle or the mythical gyrfalcon may turn up.

A privileged area and breathtaking landscapes where we have decided to organise this photo tour for a few people a year.
Hornstrandir is the ideal place for landscape photographers. During the summer, the polar day offers low light and sunsets and sunrises that last for hours. These times are also perfect for photographing Arctic Fox and seabirds.
